we need some support on the SHLT5 soil mosture sensor. We bought them from an Italian reseller : https://www.robot-italy.com/it/soil-temperature-moisture-sensor-sht10.html
Currently we are developing a microcrontroller based soil humidity/temperature IoT station and at the heart of the system we have chosen your sensor. During the test period it rained therefore the ground started to became more and more wet so all the sensors started to read higher humidity values until all of them (exept one) started to return strange values. Sometimes they fail the humidity value (returning a value too high) but mostly they return 615.35 as temperature and -6274.38 as humidity.
If can help you we placed the sensor inside a rounded metal case (attached image case.jpg) that protect it from mechanical stress but permit the contact with the soil to read the humidity; this compound is then palaced on the ground 30cm deep (more or less). The whole system is visible in the image kit-jpg.
Worried ‘bout what could had happende we carefully removed the metal cover and discovered that the pcb soldered electrical connections suffered from what can be called “corrosion inducted by current flow”. The proof is in the images you can find attached in this e-mail.
We are surprised and worried ‘cause this is designed to be “waterproof package, and can be used for measurement of soil” as we can read in your datasheet (https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/datasheets/SLHT5.pdf). We have purchased a set of 10 sensors and most of them suffered from this type of corrosion leading to a sensor malfunction. In rare case the sensor recovered after 1 or 2 days (after removing it from the ground and placing in our office in the air) but our product is designed to be placed on the ground and never be moved ‘cause by design we need to measure the humidty of the soil!!!
Your sensor have to be placed on the ground and have to work in any situation, not only in the desert. When we have rain (not monsones) the soil became wet and it would be ok if the readings are high or out of a normal range but is not acceptable that we have a malfunction, in other words the sensor stop to work and potentialy is damaged forever so our future customers will became very angry of that…could you imagine a soil moisture sensor that stop to work after the firs rain?
